Only 140 miles down I-25 from Denver is the 18-hole Hollydot Golf Course. The community course is inexpensive, has nice views and available tee times. Call while driving for tee time availability. Then it is 41 miles on to La Veta and Grandote Peaks Golf Course. 719-676-3341 www.hollydot.com

Exit I-25 at Walsenburg onto US 160 to LaVeta to play Grandote Peaks. The first Tom Weiskopf design in Colorado, the course has been renovated, has a new restaurant and offers reasonable rates. Lodging is limited but the course has a group lodge and RV park. 719-999-7529. www.playgrandote.com.

Play Grandote Peaks in the afternoon. Stay overnight at the Two Fox Cabins. Most cabins have kitchens. The next morning drive the 113 miles toward Taos. At Fort Garland., take the Colorado 159 cutoff south into New Mexico and Taos.

Another route into New Mexico is on US 285 south 235 miles to Alamosa. Play in the afternoon at Cattails Golf Course along the banks of the Rio Grande River. Tall cottonwoods frame the fairways. Lodging is cheaper here than driving on down to Taos 90 miles away. 719-937-7853. www.alamosacattails.com

Driving on to Taos, take the US 64 cutoff to drive over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. At 1,280 feet across, it is 650 feet above the river. Stop at the viewing area.
