
Arriving from Texas on US 285, stay at the El Sendero Hotel in Santa Fe. It is the most affordable among downtown hotels. Golfers will need the car to reach the courses. For non-golfers, The Plaza and 100 art galleries along Canyon Road are within walking distance.

The isolated course is on tribal land 40 minutes south of Santa Fe off I-25. The Pueblo de Cochiti course was built by resort architect Robert Trent Jones II for the Department of Interior. It is operated by the tribe with no houses or lodging. Wide open fairways and silence. 505-934-6367

North of Santa Fe are the three nine-hole courses of the huge Buffalo Thunder Casino Resort. Two were designed by Colorado golfer Hale Irwin. Fairways run through pinon pine and along ridges. The clubhouse is separate and above the resort. 505-455-5555

One of the highest rated and most challenging courses is up US 285 outside Espanola.. The course fairways climb among rocky peaks and valleys outside of town. Return to Santa Fe to stay. www.golfblackmesa.com

South of Santa Fe in Bernalillo at the Santa Ana Star Resort is the Twin Warriors course. Fairways run thru challenging terrain of pinon pines, ravines and water features. 505-771-6155 www.twin.mynewmexicogolf.com

An additional 18-hole course is at the Santa Ana Star resort. Rooms are expensive weekends but check for weekday specials online. From here I-40 east back to Texas connects in Albuquerque. 505-466-2378
